Dog Licenses
The State of Maine requires that dogs be licensed in the town of residence of the owner.
Each dog six months of age or older must be licensed.
Dog licenses expire on December 31st of each year. An additional late fee of $25 per dog will be imposed beginning February 1, 2023.
The cost at the City Clerk’s office is $6.00 for an altered dog, $11.00 for an unaltered one. To receive a license, dog owners must show a State of Maine rabies certificate, a spay or neuter certificate, and provide your dog’s veterinarian’s name and phone number (if this information isn’t already on file at the Clerk’s office).
Renewal dog licenses may be done online October 15, 2023 through January 31, 2024. Click on the link below to renew a dog license on line during that period of time.
Effective August 1, 2018, all credit / debit transactions will be assessed an administrative cost. This cost will be added to the total transaction amount. The administrative cost is 2.5% of the transaction amount or $1.00 for transactions less than $40.00. Customers will be advised of the administrative cost before completion of the transaction.
The City licenses approximately 2,500 dogs each year. City Code limits the number of dogs to be kept at any one residence to 3 (more than six months of age).
