10/13/2020 - City of Bangor and Bicycle Coalition of Maine - Demonstration Project

On October 1, 2020 staff from the Bicycle Coalition of Maine installed a temporary demonstration project at the intersection of Forest Avenue and State Street and at the intersection of Birch Street and State Street. The project is supported by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM), Walk “n” Roll and AARP- Maine. The intent of the project is to improve visibility and safety at the crosswalks for both pedestrian and motorists at these intersections. The project utilizes roadway paint and reflective delineators to bring more attention to the crosswalk locations, reduce crosswalk lengths, and hopefully reduce vehicle speeds in the proximity of the crosswalks.

The project will remain in place as long as weather permits. BCM has developed an online survey to gain input from those who utilize this intersection. The City hope that residents and users of this intersection will provide their input. The survey is located at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BangorDemo2020

The City of Bangor has a future roadway improvement project on State Street that may incorporate these safety improvements if this demonstration project yields successful results. Should you have any questions concerning this demonstration project, please call the City of Bangor Engineering Department at 992-4249.
