9/30/2019 - Bangor Fire Department to Host Open House on Saturday, October 5th

Bangor Fire Department to Host Open House on Saturday, October 5th

The Bangor Maine Fire Department will host an Open House for Fire Prevention Month this Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at all three fire stations. Visitors will have a chance to "join" the Bangor Fire Department as "Junior Firefighters."

Special activities will be held at each of the three fire stations. With each completed task, the junior firefighter will receive an entry in a contest which will reward one winner with a ride to school in a fire engine as well as a new bike donated by IAFF Union, Local #772.

At the Central Fire Station on Main Street, junior firefighters will be able to tour Engine #1, Rescue #1, Ladder #1, and the Heavy Rescue Truck. As part of their "training," they can also go through the Smoke Trailer to earn a second entry.

At Station #5 on Hogan Road, junior firefighters can check out the equipment housed there, including the Mobile Command Vehicle, and earn an additional entry by successfully using a fire hose.

Finally, at Station #6, junior firefighters will practice putting on fire gear and checking out the trucks located at this station, including Tanker #6.

Additional entries can also be earned by learning the nicknames of at least three firefighters, or learning how to tie a knot from a firefighter. If a junior firefighter visits all three stations and completes the bonus drills, they can earn up to eight entries in the contest. (It is not necessary to visit all three fire stations - doing so only increases the odds of winning.)

This year, the Fire Department is also holding its second annual poster contest. The winning artist will see their work turned into a vinyl wrap, which will be displayed on the Fire Prevention Van for an entire year. The winner will also receive a ride to school in a fire engine. The theme for the poster this year is: Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape. Artwork should be submitted on an 8.5"x11" or 11"x17" piece of paper with the first name on the front, and full name, address, phone number, grade, and school on the back no later than October 19, 2019.
