For the first time in the forty nine year history of the event, the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race has been re-scheduled. “The conditions this spring have been challenging to many race organizers” said Tracy Willette, Director of Bangor Parks and Recreation, sponsor of the race. “After assessing the entire course yesterday, we made a determination to reschedule the race.” continued Willette.
The new date for the race is Saturday April 25th with a start time of 8:30AM in Kenduskeag village. All other details of the race remain the same and pre-race registrations will be accepted up until Friday, April 24th at 1:00PM. As is the case each year, registrations after that date and time will be considered race day registrations and risk starting at the end of the start on Saturday.
Current stream conditions, specifically the amount of ice still left in the stream was the determining factor for Parks and Recreation’s decision to reschedule the race. “There is still a significant amount of ice in the first ten miles of the course” added Willette. “We were not confident that the ice would release in time to create a safe course for our pad-dlers” he continued.
This is the 49th annual race. The pre race registration fee is $20.00 per paddler with a race day registration fee of $40.00 per paddler. There are twenty four different classes of competition which include classes for experienced, recreational or beginner paddlers. Those interested in participating can register online at www.bangorparksandrec.com or stop by the Parks and Recreation office at 647 Main Street in Bangor.
