Job Summary:
Under the direction of the WIC Program Manager, the Nutrition Counselor provides nutrition counseling to WIC eligible participants. This position establishes WIC eligibility, determines nutritional risk factors, performs nutrition assessments, documents health and social service referrals, provides food and formula packages, breastfeeding support, and enters data into the WIC data application system. The Nutrition Counselor travels throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties to provide WIC services and to implement outreach and participant retention activities.
Duties:
- Perform applicant certification to determine eligibility using anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin results, dietary assessments, health histories, and other supplied medical documentation
- Perform height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements
- Provide interpretation of the above assessments and explain its meaning to participants/caregivers
- Refer participants to other health and social service agencies
- Provide nutrition and health counseling based on assessment and/or participant-identified needs
- Develop and lead nutrition education classes
- Participate in program and agency staff meetings, trainings, and other activities as requested
- Attend conferences and workshops to increase nutrition, breastfeeding and health related knowledge
- Complete various projects, goals, and objectives as determined by the nutrition education component of the contract
- Input data into the WIC data application system, answer phones, schedule appointments, build clinic schedules and follow-up on missed appointments
- Utilize media and other platforms to meet program outreach requirements
- Conduct community engagement activities throughout the coverage area
- Develop and implement community outreach and participant retention plan in accordance to WIC Program Policies and contract requirements
- Pack and transport gear, travel to, set up and break down WIC satellite clinics in a variety of community settings throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties
- Perform other related work as required
Requirements:
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or health-related field or Registered Dietetic Technician
- Excellent public relation and communication skills with colleagues, medical care providers, and participants
- Experience with maternal and child nutrition and the social service system is desired
- Excellent organizational skills
- Flexibility and motivation in fast paced office
- Ability to operate a computer with ease (Microsoft Office, email, internet)
- Ability to travel throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties
- Must hold a valid State of Maine Driver’s License
- Ability to perform moderate lifting (to 35 lbs.) required
Pay range $23.74 to $31.94 per hour. Benefits for this part-time position include dental and vision insurance as well as a retirement plan with employer contribution; group life insurance, and accrued leave (Earned Time Off) based upon hours worked.
