Man arrested for destroying property of a local downtown business.

BANGOR, Maine -- Bangor Police arrested Matthew Bowden, 46, unhoused, after officers observed him using a hammer to destroy a granite pillar in front of a downtown business on Main Street.

On Wednesday, February 11th, at approximately 04:13 a.m., Bangor Police responded to a business on Main Street after a caller reported seeing a man beating a pillar with a hammer. When officers arrived, they found Bowden actively using a hammer to hit the pillar and noted a large amount of granite had been removed. Officers also noticed that granite from the door frame of the business had also been damaged.

Bowden was arrested and transported to Penobscot County Jail, charged with the following:

  • Criminal Mischief, Class D
  • Disorderly Conduct, Class E
  • Violation of Conditions of Release, Class E
