Fire Prevention Bureau
The Fire Prevention Bureau is charged with the duty and responsibility of enforcing the fire code. The responsibilities of the Bureau include enforcing all provisions of the City of Bangor Fire Code, Life Safety Code and Building Code that relates to fire prevention. The Bureau provides services that are aimed at the prevention of loss of life and property. The Bureau is staffed by two full-time Fire Inspectors and a full-time Public Education Officer.
Fire Inspectors
The responsibilities of the Bureau include enforcing the provisions of Title 25 in the Maine Revised Statutes, and the various provisions of the Life Safety, Fire Prevention, Fuel Gas, Hazardous Materials, and Building Chapters in the City of Bangor Municipal Code. The inspectors perform approximately 1600 inspections annually which are triggered through citizen request, complaint, interagency referral, the building permit process and city licensing. The Fire Inspectors, like Code Enforcement Officers, are sworn Constables with the statutory powers and duties of a constable under Title 30-A, section 2673.
Report a Fire Code Issue
You can alert the Bureau of fire code issues here, or by more traditional means (in person, phone, email).
The Fire Prevention Bureau is located at 73 Harlow Street on the first floor of City Hall, adjacent to the Code Enforcement Division. Inspectors can be reached at 207-992-4263; fax 207-992-4196; or emailing the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Plan Review
Before any fire alarm, detection, fire suppressions system, flammable or combustible liquid storage tanks are installed, enlarged, or altered in any way, plans and specifications are reviewed and approved by the Fire Prevention Bureau. The Fire Inspectors are Certified Fire Plans Examiners and serve as the designated enforcement officers representing the authority having jurisdiction. The code used to determine life safety compliance is NFPA 101 2009 Edition.
Public Education
The Public Education Officer informs the public on the importance of fire safety. Hundreds of people are educated on fire safety each year. This includes Bangor area students from grades 1st through 5th, members of several senior citizen groups, businesses, fire safety in the work place programs, PTAs, scout groups, and many other organizations.
You may email Deputy Chief Eric Pelletier or call 207-992-4714.
