Transit CenterConstruction began this week on the Bangor Area Transit Center which is located in Pickering Square.

The proposed Transit Center is a 2,200-square-foot single-story building and includes an indoor waiting area, administrative space, public bathrooms, a bus driver's room, and a security office. The exterior of the building includes covered waiting areas, outdoor seating, lighting, and accessible passenger loading areas.

Benchmark Construction, of Westbrook, Maine was the selected Contractor to complete the project. The construction cost for the Transit Center is about $3.45 million. Funding for the project is provided through grants from the Federal Transit Administration and the Maine Department of Transportation with the City of Bangor and local Community Connector partners providing a 20% match.

The expected completion date for the project is December 2022, subject to change. The Community Connector bus service will maintain continuous operation during the construction of the new Transit Center.

On September 21, 2020, Artifex Architects & Engineers of Bangor was awarded the design contract for the Bangor Transit Center at Pickering Square. The project involves designing a new modern Transit Center building and canopy that will focus on the transit rider with amenities that improve the passenger experience.

The new facility will incorporate ADA-accessible elements that will enhance the usability and mobility of all users. The proposed amenities will include heat and air conditioning, an enclosed waiting area, outside shelters and interactive schedule information kiosks, public restrooms, a bus operators' break room, and private restrooms.

Transit Center Floor Plan

On Monday December 14, 2020 a pre-council meeting was held to review and select a concept to move forward with. The council selected the Courtyard building and canopy concept as shown in the images below. Artifex will now begin the design development stage to advance the selected conceptual design into the final design phase such that project budgets can be further refined. Once a final plan and budget is approved by council construction documents will be developed for contractor bidding.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2021.

Updates will be provided to report on the progress of the project periodically.
