ADA/Paratransit System Dispatcher

The City of Bangor’s Community Connector has an exciting opportunity and is currently seeking applicants to fill a full-time Dispatcher position.  This role primarily assists with the operations of dispatching transit personnel related to ADA paratransit to ensure safe, timely transportation of the Community Connector passengers. This position also assists in the development and maintenance of routes and emergencies, as well as adjustments due to crashes, breakdowns, weather, or other problems that may arise as a result of providing transportation services. The position functions as part of Community Connector team, and may fill in for management level positions as needed or required.  If you enjoy a fast-paced environment, communicating effectively with others, and working in a capacity that helps citizens in a local community, this position may be a great fit for you!

DUTIES:

Assists in the development and monitoring of transportation routes related to ADA paratransit services, in addition to fixed route when needed, to improve safety and efficiency through a thorough knowledge of streets and geography.

  • Maintains an up-to-date listing of vans and assigned drivers.

  • Assures ready access to an up-to-date route sheet for each scheduled route.

  • Assures that each scheduled route is appropriately covered by utilizing available relief or spare board and or seniority per union contract.

  • Maintains an accurate daily attendance roster of drivers.

  • Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of all routes and driving State, Federal, and City of Bangor & Community Connector rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of routes, roads, and transit covered areas

  • Assists with fixed route operation when needed.

  • Ensures that drivers clock their times accurately and that any write-in time is

    accurately reflected on the daily report.

  • Operates two-way radio base stations and telephones;

  • Communicates with department employees, dispatching to needed locations to respond to routine requests or emergency situations.

  • Monitors special equipment as assigned and maintain appropriate records.

  • Maintains or assists in maintaining assigned files and records; receives and processes information according to established guidelines and procedures.

  • Communicates with outside organizations, businesses, government organizations, local police and others as appropriate; communicates with other city employees as necessary.

  • Communicates with department employees, riders, and other members of the community; receives requests, questions, concerns and suggestions and provides routine information and assistance or routes to appropriate personnel.

  • Maintains current knowledge of routes, ADA paratransit needs and locations to assure timely services and accurate information.

  • May conduct interviews related to ADA paratransit.

  • Performs a variety of clerical support duties as assigned; types correspondence, memos and other items; compiles data from clearly defined sources and prepares reports; answers telephone, routes calls or messages; prepares and processes requisitions; distributes mail.

  • Operates standard office machines.

  • Performs daily cash-up with supervisor.Assists with drug testing when needed.Assists with special projects as needed.

  • Assists with management functions and duties as required

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Operations Officer and or Bus Superintendent.

  • Assist with driver needs, driver scheduling, assigning buses, and filling shifts when drivers call in.

  • Will be required to drive a bus to cover breaks, maintenance issues or when accidents occur. Will be required to drive temporarily on a route from time to time, if a driver is not available.

  • Open and or close up office as needed using proper procedure and protocols.

  • Reconcile ticket/pass sales against cash received. Assign priority to vehicle defect reports, maintain a working relationship with bus mechanics regarding vehicle maintenance and notify Bus Superintendent of any problems and/or inoperable buses.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of one to three years of related experience in a transit environment & or dispatching; advanced computer skills; and experience with transit software programs helpful; 

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate personnel, communicate effectively, multitask and handle details, meet deadlines, work independently, facilitate cooperative liaisons;

  • A valid Class B license with passenger and airbrake endorsements may be required within one (1) year of hire.

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English Language effectively.

  • Ability to pass and remain compliant with DOT/FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to sit for up to 8 hours per day

  • Ability to drive, see, use fine motor skills

  • Occasional standing, walking, crouching, kneeling, pulling and pushing

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively

  • May be required to travel throughout the Community Connector Bus Routes.

Pay range is $21.51 to $28.91 per hour for a 40-hour work week (nights and weekends included) and includes a comprehensive benefits package consisting of the following and more:
