Bangor Community Action Team (BCAT) Specialist 


The City is seeking qualified applications for the position of Bangor Community Action Team (BCAT) Specialist. This position may work independently, or in teams of two, and respond to citizens in Bangor upon referrals primarily from the Bangor Police Department Dispatch. 

The Specialist will respond to calls not requiring police officer level intervention and provides crisis assistance, welfare/wellness checks, and assists businesses to diffuse tensions between individuals, businesses, and more. This position is a highly visible public role that interacts with citizens, employees, and other organizations regularly. Events involving crisis or emergency response such as drug use, death, violence, overdose, or life-threatening situations may be encountered. 

Duties include: conducting intake interviews, connecting individuals with resources, developing and carrying out action plans, completing daily reports, interfacing with Police Department, Public Health, hospitals, mental health providers, homeless shelters, and other agencies. The ability to communicate effectively and professionally in writing and verbally, particularly in situations when persons may be in difficult circumstances and/or resistant to help is important. 

This position has physical requirements for lifting, driving, and walking through woods and difficult, uneven terrain with exposure to ticks and in all weather conditions. The position largely works in the field and requires walking and standing for significant periods and portions of a workday. May require flexibility in scheduling including working evenings and weekends as needed or on a rotating schedule. 

 An associates or higher degree in mental health, social work, emergency/crisis response, or experience in a related field is required.  Education may be substituted with equivalent years of related professional experience. Previous outreach, case management, or emergency responder experience desired. Experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation skills desired. Ability to legally operate a City vehicle is required. 

The current pay range is $19.25 to $25.86/hours (40 hour workweek) and includes a comprehensive benefits packages including: health insurance plans with choices including low deductible plans and up to 80% of premium paid by the City, choices of dental, vision, group life, and supplemental plans, paid long-term disability insurance; 2 weeks paid time off, up to 3 weeks sick leave, and 13 paid holidays per year, plus compensatory time off; and a retirement plan with generous City contribution with only a 1-year vesting period.
