Public Works Arborist

The City of Bangor is seeking an Arborist I to support forestry operations in the Public Works Forestry Division. The City of Bangor Public Works Department provides extensive infrastructure support to the residents of Bangor. This work includes planting, pruning, and removal of shrubs and trees according to established arboricultural specifications and City ordinance. Additional duties include snow management (plowing) in the winter season, emergency storm response for downed trees, landscaping, and pesticide applications on public properties.

Required knowledge and experience include:

  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, and write in English language

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations

  • Basic ability to use Microsoft office products desired. Training will be provided

  • Familiarity with, or ability to learn, the City of Bangor ARC GIS system and asset management software

  • Ability to conduct professional communications via phone and online training meetings e.g. Zoom, Teams, etc. Training will be provided

  • Working knowledge of landscaping, pruning, tree removal techniques, and pesticide application procedures. Training will be provided

  • If not already in possession, candidate must earn State of Maine Pesticide Core Applicator license within 3 months. Training will be provided

  • If not already in possession, candidate must earn State of Maine Pesticide Turf Applicator license within 6 months. Training will be provided

  • If not already in possession, candidate must earn State of Maine Pesticide Ornamental Tree Applicator license within 9 months. Training will be provided

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, a First Class Landscape Arborist License. Training will be provided

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (12) months of appointment, a First Class Utility Arborist License. Training will be provided

  • Skill in operating a wide variety of light to heavy power equipment used by the department, including heavy trucks, snow plow, backhoe, chain saw, and various related hand tools and equipment

  • Ability to perform minor preventative maintenance and repair on department tools and equipment

  • Ability to effectively communicate with members of the general public in a courteous, calm, pleasant, tactful manner; generally, conduct positive interpersonal interactions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public

  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable safety and environmental rules and regulations and ability to apply such knowledge to daily operations

  • Ability to be on 24-hour call in emergencies

  • Ability to work extended overtime in emergency or public safety situations, as directed

  • Ability to legally operate assigned department vehicles

  • Possess a valid Class B Maine CDL driver’s license. Paid CDL training available for the right candidate

The benefits package includes:

- Compensation pay range is $19.26/hr. – $25.28/hr. plus applicable stipends.

-Additional hourly stipends to be paid for Class A CDL, First Class Utility Arborist License, First Class Landscape Arborist License, Commercial Pesticide Applicators License, and Certified Professional Loggers Certificate

-Starting pay can be up to $22.31/hr, plus up to $1.50/hr stipends, depending on verifiable equipment experience and licenses

-Potential for annual increases based on merit (up to 5%) AND yearly adjustments based on citywide COLA allowances

- Paid vacation days – up to 2 weeks in the first year

- Comp Time – Overtime can be converted to comp time for up to 80 additional hours paid time off

- Paid Holidays – 13 paid holidays/year

- Sick days – up to 15 paid sick days/year

- Bonus Days – can earn two bonus days off each year if you bank your sick time instead of using it

- Nine percent (9%) City retirement contribution - ask about our plan(s)

- We supply your tools, equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment with a generous boot allowance, and 75% of uniform costs are covered by the City

- 4-day workweek in the summer, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm. Three day weekends every week!

- Monday through Friday work schedule, 6:30 am – 3:00 pm, in the winter, so you can enjoy much of your afternoon off!
