Estevan Gomez Monument Deaccession Subcommittee
The Bangor City Council requested that the Commission on Cultural Development consider a proposal to deaccession the Estevan Gomez Monument. The Council Order was approved on July 27, 2020. City ordinance section 95-8 governed this process, along with the Public Arts and Monuments Policy.
The process was completed when on October 26, 2020 the City Council approved an order to deaccession the Estevan Gomez Monument. A portion of the monument has been transferred to the Bangor Historical Society, where curators will work on an appropriate display with context about the controversary surrounding Gomez and the reason for the deaccessioning. The City is working with the Indigenous community on the possibility of future artwork to commemorate our longstanding relationship.
This subcommittee has been disbanded.
