10/16/2019 - Fall Nor'easter Preparation Tips

Fall Nor'easter Preparation Tips

A fall nor'easter is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the region late tonight, Wednesday, October 16, 2019, into tomorrow, Thursday, October 17, 2019. The weather service is predicting peak wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph tomorrow. Many trees still have a full canopy of leaves that may be susceptible to damage, and possibly lead to power outages. Heavy rain and wind are forecast for the morning commute tomorrow, so please exercise caution and give yourself plenty of space and time to travel. Between 1 and 1.5" of rain is possible. The windy conditions and rapid rain accumulation may cause leaves to clog storm drains, causing areas of water ponding on roadways.

Make sure you have enough food, water, and other supplies to last at least 3 days without power. Check to make sure your battery-powered and battery backup smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have new batteries and are operational. If you need assistance with detectors, please feel free to call the Bangor Fire Department at (207) 992-4700.

If you lose power during the storm and have access to a generator, make sure it is used/installed properly with at least 20' of clearance between any doors, windows, or vents to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use a camp stove, charcoal grill, or outdoor propane heater indoors as these can start accidental fires and/or cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Please report any downed power lines or other utility problems to local authorities and remember: no line is safe to touch.

Be prepared and stay safe!
