10/10/2017 - Portions of the Bangor Waterfront to be closed beginning Tues., Oct 10
Beginning Tuesday October 10, 2017, portions of the Bangor Waterfront will be closed to the public in order to construct a coal tar remediation project within the Penobscot River. The scope of this project is to place a gravel cap over a portion of the river bottom that was previously contaminated with coal tar resulting from the operation of a coal gas plant that was in operation for several decades on Main Street in Bangor. The Engineering firm of Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company Inc. completed the design of the sediment cap for the City of Bangor and Sargent Corporation is constructing the project.
The majority of the parking spaces within the lots south of Railroad Street will be closed to the public. The Waterfront Trail will remain open during the construction however, a detour will be necessary to avoid the work zone. The project is expected to take four to six weeks to complete. The Engineering Department request that the public follow the detour signage and road closure signage associated with the project. We thank you for your cooperation.
