Environmental & Risk Management
Welcome to Bangor's Department of Environmental & Risk
Environmental Management
The Office of Environmental Management was created in January, 2005 to assist managers of City departments that are subject to regulatory requirements of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, the State Department of Environmental Protection, and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. In addition, the Office works throughout the City to improve our environmental practices and to reduce the impact of our operations on our natural resources. Reporting to the City’s Risk Manager, the Environmental Compliance & Training Officer develops, implements and administers a comprehensive citywide compliance and training program including environmental health, chemical control and hazardous waste management.
Risk Management
Risk Management is responsible for managing the full range of risks and liabilities faced by the City of Bangor. This includes the City’s liability insurance program, self-insured workers compensation, and employee safety and safety training programs. This Office is the initial contact point for individuals or organizations bringing liability claims against the City and works closely with our insurance carriers and claims adjusters in reviewing and responding to such claims. As a municipality, the City operates under the Maine Torts Claim Act, which may, under certain circumstances, protect the City from liability claims or limit the amount of damages to which the City is subject.
