Overview

BANGOR MAINE - Surprisingly Metro … Refreshingly Real

Bangor is a great place to live and to do business.  While offering the convenience and amenities you expect to find in much larger cities, Bangor is safe, friendly, and authentic.

The last two editions of Macmillan's Places Rated Almanac rated Bangor as the best North American metro area with a population under 100,000.

Bangor provides professional, retail, transportation, medical and government services to all of eastern and northern Maine and part of Atlantic Canada. Whatever your needs for specialized professional services, Bangor firms can handle them directly or through their professional affiliations. Need access to congressional offices? Maine's Senators and our Congressional Representative have offices and full-time staff here.

Healthcare is a very important segment of our service economy.  Providers include two major medical hospitals: Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital.   Acadia Hospital offers a full range of in-patient and outpatient services for individuals in need of mental health and chemical dependency services. The State operated Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center, formerly the Bangor Mental Health Institute, is also located in the city. The presence of these institutions provides Bangor with a large number of medical specialists who can meet virtually any physical or mental need along with a full range of related healthcare services.

Education. Bangor's Blue Ribbon school system is proud of students' extremely high standardized test scores and college acceptance rates. To learn more, visit www.bangorschools.net

Our post-secondary institutions provide a wealth of choices for degree programs and convenient access to lifelong learning experiences and employee training opportunities. They include:
The University of Maine
; Husson College
University of Maine at Augusta (Bangor campus)

Eastern Maine Community College

Beal College

Bangor Theological Seminary

Transportation. Bangor is located on I-95, the major north-south corridor on the East Coast. I-395 provides a quick access to State Route 1-A, which connects to the Maine Coast. Canada is 90 minutes away on State Route 9. Virtually any location in Bangor is only ten minutes away. If you are tired of long commutes, gridlock, and traffic frustration, Bangor’s the place to be.

Bangor International Airport is served by major carriers and offers daily flights to and from major cities in the Northeast, national and regional hubs, and Florida and the Caribbean.   Full immigration and customs services, plus a highly rated general aviation division distinguish Bangor amongst airports in the Northeast.

Inter-city bus service is provided by both Concord Trailways and Greyhound, with frequent service to Boston and beyond. These services provide direct connections to Amtrak service in either Portland, Maine or Boston.

The BAT Community Connector provides local bus service to the communities of Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Veazie, Orono and Old Town. This regional service operated by the City of Bangor is especially convenient for those who prefer not to rely on private transportation and serves many of our major employment and activity centers including the Bangor Mall and the University of Maine at Orono.

Bangor is within convenient highway travel distances of cities in Maine and the New England/Atlantic Canada region. Augusta, the state capital, is about an hour away. Portland can be reached in two hours, Saint John New Brunswick in three, and Boston and Montreal in four to five hours.

Leisure. Our area provides excellent shopping, entertainment, sports, and cultural experiences in both small and large venues.  Located within an easy drive of ocean, mountains, rivers and lakes, you can enjoy four seasons of outdoor recreation here.
